The Quiet, Transformative Power of Gratitude

Hi, friend

Thanksgiving is here, and with it comes a natural pause โ€” a moment the calendar sets aside each year to do something we too rarely do: stop, look around, and give thanks.

Gratitude is a strange and wonderful thing. It costs nothing. It asks nothing of anyone else. And yet researchers who study it have found, again and again, that it may be one of the most powerful forces available to us for a happier, healthier, more connected life.

People who keep a regular gratitude practice report sleeping better, feeling less anxious, and experiencing more joy. They tend to have stronger relationships and a greater sense of purpose. Something as simple as writing down three things you're thankful for, a few times a week, has been shown to measurably lift a person's mood over time.

Why would something so small make such a difference? Perhaps because gratitude changes where we point our attention. It is so easy to spend our days noticing what is missing โ€” what went wrong, what we lack, what we wish were different. Gratitude gently turns us the other way, toward what is already here, already good, already ours.

This season, we'd love to invite you to try it. Not as a chore, but as a gift to yourself. Tonight, before you sleep, think of three things โ€” they can be enormous or wonderfully small. A warm bed. A kind word from a stranger. The way the light came through the window this morning. A letter in the mailbox.

And if you feel inclined, take it one step further: tell someone. Let a person in your life know, specifically, why you're grateful for them. It may feel a little vulnerable. Do it anyway. Few gifts land more deeply than being told, in plain words, that you matter to someone.

From our family to yours, thank you. Thank you for reading these letters, for welcoming our stories into your homes, for being part of this community we cherish so much. We are grateful for you โ€” specifically, genuinely, today and every day.

Happy Thanksgiving.

With love and gratitude,
Michael & Hannie
