The Story

Boston, 1776

It's 1776, and the days of standing on neutral ground concerning American Independence are over. After her twin brother is killed at the Battle of Bunker Hill, Laurel Anna Loveland is forced to choose between her father's desire to stay neutral for the sake of his livelihood and the passion for liberty growing in her own heart. Trapped in Boston since the siege began, Laurel Anna finds herself perfectly positioned to be of great service to His Excellency, General George Washington. Through her friendship with Captain Nathan Hale, a former pupil of her father's and one of her late brother's classmates at Yale, word of her reaches the General and an independent vigilante known only as The Watcher makes contact. He asks her to become Washington's eyes and ears in the city. Having just read Common Sense, the pamphlet taking the colonies by storm, Laurel Anna can no longer remain neutral. She accepts. When the siege is finally broken, thanks in part to Laurel Anna's theatrical flair and creativity for discreetly communicating intelligence, she is asked to continue spying on the British in New York. The Watcher will remain her contact with Washington while perhaps becoming something more. In honor of her brother's sacrifice, and following the example of her courageous friend Nathan Hale, Laurel Anna becomes a spy in everything but name for the rebel cause. What follows is the most important and harrowing year of her life, and of the very country she is risking it for.
